Students will compare one and two digit numbers and will find the difference between those numbers.
Students will be introduced to the inverse relation between addition and subtraction through the use of fact families. Fact families will also be utilized to introduce missing values.
Students will practice solving addition and subtraction story problems in ways that make sense to them. Then they must write in words the strategies they used to solve the math problem.

Activities to try at home:
Age Adding: Look for opportunities to practice addition combinations such as doubles, near doubles, as well as ways to make 10. Have your child add the ages of everyone in your family and/or extended family, or create a list of friends and their ages. Encourage your child to point out doubles (i.e. 4+4), near doubles (i.e. 4+5) and combinations of 10 (i.e. 4+6 or 3+7).
Fact "Families": Pair up with a family member. Use your ages to create your own Fact "Family." Example: Bobby is 5 and Sally is 7. Bobby & Sally’s Fact "Family" 5 + 7 = 12 12 – 7 = 5 7 + 5 = 12 12 – 5 = 7
Missing Values Game: Make or purchase addition and subtraction flash cards. Cut 3x5 cards in half and paperclip to the flashcard to cover up one of the addends. Have your child find the missing value.
